Walk With Me, Taleen

I wanted to learn from everyone. My father found me teachers, and even the greengrocer in the market taught me something: how to calculate with Indian numerals.

One, two, three… and a little circle for zero!

Count the melons with me, Taleen!

At sixteen, I began to study medicine. I visited sick people and treated them for free, and they taught me more than any book.

I listened to their hearts, looked into their eyes and felt their pulse at the wrist.

Put two fingers on your wrist, Taleen. Can you feel your heart beating?

A child’s heart beats about 70 to 110 times a minute, and even faster when running!

As a thank-you, the ruler offered me a reward. I asked for just one thing: to read in his royal library.

Room after room, chest after chest of books: one room for medicine, one for poetry, one for mathematics… I read books there that I never saw anywhere again.

Which room shall we open first, Taleen?

Books back then were copied by hand, one page at a time, so every book was precious.

Wherever I lived, I worked as a doctor by day. At night I wrote by lamplight, with my students around me, reading and talking until late.

I wrote about medicine, mathematics, music, the stars and the mind…

Pass me the ink, Taleen. One more page!

Ibn Sina wrote around 450 works. About 240 of them have survived to this day.

Today, a crater on the Moon carries my name, and so do the mangrove trees that grow along the coasts of the Arab world, from the Gulf to the Red Sea: Avicennia.

So whenever you ask “why?” and won’t stop until you find out…

I’m walking right beside you, Taleen.

The story

Ibn Sina takes your child by the hand and tells them his true story: a boy in Bukhara more than a thousand years ago who learned to count from a greengrocer, read one hard book forty times, became a doctor at sixteen, cured the ruler and was given his royal library, then wrote The Canon of Medicine, studied by doctors in Europe for six hundred years. Today a crater on the Moon and the mangroves of the UAE carry his name.

When I was about seventeen, the ruler of Bukhara, Nuh ibn Mansur, fell very ill, and his own doctors couldn’t help him. So they sent for me, the young doctor everyone was talking about.

I looked after him day and night… and he got better!

Hand me the medicine, Taleen. Gently!

This is Taleen's book. Yours will have your child's name and look.

Hello, Taleen. My name is Ibn Sina, but in Europe they call me Avicenna.

I was born more than a thousand years ago, around the year 980, in a village near Bukhara, a great city on the Silk Road, where caravans of camels carried silk, spices and books.

Come, Taleen. Let’s walk through my city.

One book was so difficult that I read it forty times and still didn’t understand it. Then one day in the book market, a seller begged me to buy a little book for three coins.

It was written by a scholar called al-Farabi… and suddenly everything made sense! I was so happy that the very next day I gave money to the poor.

Never give up on a hard question, Taleen.

Al-Farabi was so admired that people called him “the Second Teacher”, after the Greek thinker Aristotle.
