Walk With Me, Taleen

Nobody wrote down much about my childhood. But I can tell you the question that filled my whole life: what is light, and how do we see?

In the daytime we see everything: the palms, the boats, even our own shadows. At night, in the dark, we see nothing at all. So seeing must have something to do with light…

Make a shadow bird on the wall, Taleen! How does the light do that?

· Did you know?

Light is the fastest thing there is. In one second, it could travel around the Earth more than seven times!

When I grew up, I studied mathematics and science, and my name became known far beyond Basra. Then I said something bold: that I could control the floods of the Nile, Egypt’s great river.

The ruler of Egypt heard about it and invited me to Cairo. It is told that he rode out of the city himself to welcome me!

Bring the plans, Taleen. The ruler is waiting!

On Roda Island in Cairo you can still see a Nilometer, built in 861: a deep stone well with a tall marked column, used to measure how high the Nile rose.

Try this with me. Make a room completely dark, and let the light in through one tiny hole. On the wall opposite, a picture of the sunny street outside appears, in colour, but upside down!

Light travels in straight lines, so light from the top of a palm tree goes through the hole and lands at the bottom of the wall.

You can make your own with a shoebox, a pinhole and some thin paper.

Look, Taleen: the palm trees are standing on their heads!

The word “camera” comes from camera obscura, which is Latin for “dark room”.

I wrote that someone searching for the truth should not simply believe what they read, even in the books of the greatest scholars. Test it with experiments, look carefully, and measure!

Our eyes can be tricked, too. Put a straight stick in water and it looks broken. Pull it out: it’s straight again! I studied how light bends when it passes between water and air.

Try it, Taleen. Is the stick really broken?

Ibn al-Haytham even wrote a book called Doubts about Ptolemy, about mistakes he found in the work of one of the most famous scientists of ancient times.

Have you ever seen a giant Moon rising over the rooftops? Later that night, high in the sky, it looks much smaller.

I wrote that the Moon doesn’t really change size: it’s our mind playing a trick. Near the ground, with houses and trees in between, the Moon seems farther away, so our mind makes it look bigger.

Hold up your thumb, Taleen. Is the Moon really bigger?

· Did you know?

The Moon has no light of its own: moonlight is sunlight, bouncing off the Moon to us.

The story

Ibn al-Haytham takes your child by the hand and tells them his true story: a boy in Basra more than a thousand years ago who wondered how we see, a bold promise to tame the Nile and a journey up the river to Aswan, years shut away in his house in Cairo studying a single beam of sunlight, the dark room that turns the world upside down, and the seven-volume Book of Optics that showed how light travels into our eyes. Today a crater on the Moon carries his name.

Is it true?

Yes. Every date, place and person is real, and every page has a “Did you know?” fact. At the back: a timeline of his life, a few new words, and a certificate in your child's name.

I had to tell the ruler that my plan could not work, and I was afraid of his anger.

It is told that I pretended to be unwell, so that he would leave me alone. For years I stayed shut inside my house, until the ruler died in 1021.

But I was never bored. A quiet room and a beam of sunlight were all I needed to study light.

Hold your hand in the sunbeam, Taleen. See how straight it is?

· Did you know?

Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to travel from the Sun to the Earth.

A true story on every page

Real dates, places and people, told by Ibn al-Haytham himself, with a “Did you know?” fact on every spread.

Their name on every page

Ibn al-Haytham talks to them all the way: “Hold up your thumb, Taleen. Is the Moon really bigger?”

Young Scientist

Taleen walked with Ibn al-Haytham from Basra to Cairo, travelled up the Nile, held a sunbeam, saw the world upside down in a dark room, measured the Moon with a thumb, and learned to test every idea.

This is Taleen's book. Yours will have your child's name and look.

Hello, Taleen. My name is Ibn al-Haytham.

I was born more than a thousand years ago, around the year 965, in Basra, a busy port city in Iraq. Ships sailed in from the Gulf, and date palms lined its rivers and canals.

Today people call me “the father of optics”: the science of light and of how we see.

Take my hand, Taleen. Let’s walk by the river.

Near Basra, the Tigris and the Euphrates join to make one big river, the Shatt al-Arab, which flows into the Gulf.

On Roda Island in Cairo you can still see a Nilometer, built in 861: a deep stone well with a tall marked column, used to measure how high the Nile rose.

With a team of builders, I travelled up the Nile, all the way to Aswan, where the river rushes between giant granite rocks.

On the way I saw the enormous buildings of the ancient Egyptians, and I thought: people this clever would have tamed the river long ago, if it could be done. At Aswan I saw that, with the tools of my time, it couldn’t.

Hold the rope tight, Taleen. Feel how hard the river pulls!

In 1970, Egypt finished the Aswan High Dam, near the place Ibn al-Haytham had visited. It finally controls the Nile’s floods, almost a thousand years after his journey.
