Walk With Me, Taleen

My family didn’t have much money, so I couldn’t go to school. The village priest taught me to read and write Arabic, and my mother, Kamila, filled our house with songs and stories.

But more than anything, I loved to draw. When there was no paper, I went outside and drew in the snow for hours.

Here, Taleen, take a stick. What will you draw?

The mountains above Bsharri get so much snow that people go skiing there today.

Then my family lost our home, and life became very hard. In 1895, when I was twelve, my mother took my big brother Boutros, my little sisters Marianna and Sultana, and me on a ship across the sea, to America.

I stood at the back of the ship and watched the mountains of Lebanon grow smaller and smaller.

Stand with me, Taleen. Let’s wave goodbye.

Many Lebanese families left in those years. Today, millions of people with Lebanese roots live all over the world.

But I missed my first language. So when I was fifteen, I sailed back to Beirut to study at Madrasat al-Hikma, the School of Wisdom.

I read the great Arab poets late into the night. With my friend Youssef Howayek, I started a school magazine called al-Manara: the Lighthouse.

Look, Taleen! I’ve written your name on our blackboard.

At that show I met Mary Haskell, who ran a school in Boston. She believed in me, and she helped me for the rest of my life.

In 1908, she sent me to Paris, the city every painter dreamed of. I painted from morning until night.

Sit still, Taleen… I’m painting your portrait!

Gibran drew famous people of his time, including the composer Claude Debussy and the sculptor Auguste Rodin.

In 1911, I moved to New York, to a small studio I called ‘the Hermitage’. I wrote in Arabic, and then in English too.

In 1920, with my friend Mikhail Naimy and other writers from Lebanon and Syria, I started the Pen League. We wanted Arabic writing to feel fresh and free, like words straight from the heart.

It’s our meeting tonight, Taleen. Will you read us a poem?

Gibran talks to them all the way: “Sit still, Taleen… I'm painting your portrait!”

We settled in Boston, in a busy neighbourhood full of Arabic-speaking families. At school I had to learn English from the very first word, and they even changed the spelling of my name, from Khalil to Kahlil!

I drew in every notebook I had. One day a photographer named Fred Holland Day saw my drawings, and he opened the door to museums and books I had never imagined.

Come, Taleen. Let’s go and see.

This is Taleen's book. Yours will have your child's name and look.

Hello, Taleen. My name is Gibran Khalil Gibran.

Give me your hand, and I’ll show you where my story begins.

This is Bsharri, my village, high in the mountains of North Lebanon. I was born here on 6 January 1883, in a stone house above a deep green valley.

Can you hear the waterfalls? I fell asleep to them every night when I was little.

In 1883, Lebanon was part of the Ottoman Empire, which was ruled from Istanbul.

The mountains above Bsharri get so much snow that people go skiing there today.

One day, my mother gave me a present I never forgot: a book of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, an artist who had lived four hundred years before me.

Faces, horses, hands, wings… I turned the pages again and again, and I couldn’t stop looking.

That was the day I knew, Taleen: I wanted to be an artist.

· Did you know?

Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa and filled his notebooks with ideas for flying machines.

When I was ten, I was climbing near the cliffs of the Qadisha Valley… and I fell. My shoulder was badly hurt.

To help it heal, my arm was bound up and had to stay still for forty whole days.

I couldn’t run or climb, Taleen. So I watched, I listened, and I dreamed.

Above the Qadisha Valley grows a forest of cedars, some more than 1,000 years old. The cedar is the tree on Lebanon’s flag.
