I’ll Teach You Everything, Zain

Hello, Zain! I’m Taleen, your big sister. Let me come close, so you can see me.

I waited for you for so long. Now I’m going to teach you everything, with two words for everything: one in each of our languages.

Let’s start with the first one, Zain: hello!

· Did you know?

Newborn babies see best about 20–30 cm away: about as far as the face of someone holding them close.

Look at the sky, Zain! At sunset, it changes colour.

First it’s gold, then orange, then pink, then purple… and then it’s night.

You can’t see all the colours yet, but I’ll tell you every one.

This one is my favourite, Zain: orange!

· Did you know?

Newborn babies see bold black-and-white patterns best. Colours come slowly: by about 5 months old, babies can see them well.

When the light goes out, our room looks different. But it’s the same room, Zain: same chair, same shelf, same teddy.

Look, a bird on the wall! Don’t worry, it’s only my hand.

If you feel a little scared, hold my finger tight.

You’re brave, Zain. And so am I.

· Did you know?

When you put a finger in a newborn baby’s open hand, their fingers close around it all by themselves. It’s called the grasp reflex.

Let’s build a tower, Zain. One block, two blocks, three blocks… higher and higher!

And now the best part: we knock it down.

Ready? One, two… CRASH! Your foot got there first! And you laughed!

Again? Again! Another tower for you, Zain.

· Did you know?

Babies start to chuckle at around 4 months old, and most laugh out loud by about 6 months.

Bath time, Zain! Water is for washing. Water is for drinking.

But the best thing about water is… splashing!

Kick your feet: splash, splash! Oops, now I’m wet too, and so is Simsim.

That’s water, Zain: warm and wet and wonderful.

· Did you know?

A newborn baby’s body is about 78% water. A grown-up’s body is only about 55 to 60% water.

The story

Your child becomes the big sister or big brother, and makes the new baby a promise: “I'll teach you everything.” Hello and good morning, the colours of the sunset, what the cat says, how to share a snack (when the baby can only drink milk), how to be brave in the dark, Teta's lullaby, a tower to knock down, splashing in the bath, dabke and the moon. One word on every page, in both your languages, until one day the baby will teach them something too.

Are the facts true?

Yes. Every “Did you know?” is a real, checked fact about babies, and the first-year pages follow the milestones of the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics. At the back: a few words to know, and a certificate for the big sister or big brother.

Snack time! Let’s share, Zain: one apple slice for you, one for me.

One for you… oh. You only drink milk!

So one for me, and one for me, and one more for me.

When you’re bigger, Zain, we’ll share everything.

· Did you know?

Babies need only milk until they are about 6 months old. Then they start to try their first foods, alongside their milk.

Two words for everything

On every spread the big sister or brother teaches the baby one word, in both your languages, with a true “Did you know?” fact about babies.

Their name on every page

Taleen talks to her baby brother all the way: “You're brave, Zain. And so am I.”

Best Big Sister

Taleen said hello to Zain, taught Zain two words for everything, sang Teta’s lullaby, shared (almost) every snack, and was brave in the dark.

Good morning, Zain! It’s me, Taleen. The sun is up, and so are you. (You were up in the night too. Three times!)

In Arabic, when someone says ‘sabah el kheir’, you answer ‘sabah el nour’: a morning of light.

And look, Zain: you smiled at me!

· Did you know?

A baby’s first real smile, a smile back at someone, usually comes at around 6 to 8 weeks old.

This is our cat, Simsim. Simsim says ‘miaow’.

A dog says ‘woof’, and a duck says ‘quack’.

But guess what? Cats say almost the same thing in every language. Clever Simsim!

Say it with me, Zain: cat!

· Did you know?

Newborn babies can hear the difference between the sounds of every language in the world. By their first birthday, they become experts in the languages they hear most.
